Russian President Dmitry Medvedev will today start his official three day visit to India where he is expected to discuss issues related to trade, the economy, energy, cultural cooperation and international issues. Medvedev it expected to meet India’s President Pratibha Patil, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Foreign Minister SM Krishna.

It is expected that Medvedev’s visit, following from leaders of Britain, the United States, France and China who have also visited India in recent months, will be to persuade New Delhi of the importance of a stronger relationship with Moscow, even with India’s close ties with other Western powers.

Nuclear power will also be discussed as Russia will be keen to continue supplying technology and expertise to India, as there are plans to add 63,000 megawatts of nuclear power by 2032. Defence issues are also likely to be discussed as over the years India has also become one of the biggest importers of Russian military hardware.

India-Russia relations have grown handsomely over the past few years and in 2009 India-Russia trade reached $7.5 billion and both countries would like to see trade reach $20billion by 2015.
