India defence online, New Delhi – With the expanding budgetary allocation for the Indian defence sector as well as the opportunities arising from the defence offsets policy, Electronic Industries Association of India (ELCINA) is making a concerted effort to make local companies a part of the global supply chain for defence and aerospace products.

The ELCINA is a veteran association of electronics hardware manufacturers in India which proposes to place local firms, including small and medium enterprises (SMEs), in a viable position to gain from the Indian defence sector as well as the offset policy. With this intention and providing the latest Indian defence news and information, ELCINA is organising the Strategic Electronics Summit (SES) 2010 in July at the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru.

As a precursor to this summit, ELCINA recently organised a seminar of key players in defence and aerospace including; Thales India Private Limited, Tata Industrial Services Limited, Sukhoi Aviation Holding Company, Religare, Amphenol Interconnect, CDIL, JV Electronics, Bhansali Udyog and Pulse Magnetics. This event in Delhi was meant to be a feeler for the upcoming summit in Bengaluru.

In the upcoming July summit, ELCINA is anticipating crucial players in defence electronics to participate including large equipment manufacturers from India and abroad as well as the state-owned defence units.

Explaining the chain of events in the Begaluru summit, K Srinivasan, secretary, ELCINA indicated that the event will include a full day mini exhibition where suppliers can showcase their capabilities and buyers can showcase their products and services for which they are seeking suppliers. There will also be a conference on the theme ‘Emerging opportunities in the defence and aerospace value chain” where experts from the government and industry will share their perspectives and experiences – sharing relevant Indian defence news and information.

ELCINA officials revealed that the production of strategic electronics in India during 2007-08 was Rs 57 billion which rose to Rs 69 billion in 2008-09 indicating a growth of 21 per cent. ELCINA has indicated that the growth during the current year is expected to exceed 25 per cent which is a significant window of opportunity for the SME and other local producers since Indian defence budgetary allocation, as well as offsets are also on the rise.

Rajoo Goel, secretary general of ELCINA explains that ELCINA can play a role in offering a platform for business match making. He explained that although local firms have the expertise to meet the demands of the Indian defence and aerospace sector, they find it difficult to tap this opportunity as they lack the Indian defence news and information on quality requirements, business and partnering opportunities.

Similarly, the global suppliers of equipment are looking for support for sourcing their component requirements from India to meet their offset obligations. Hence, ELCINA aims to plug this gap by creating awareness among the local producers and creating a platform for increased business interaction between buyers and suppliers.
