India-Malaysia Conclude CECA

The negotiations for the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) between India and Malaysia have been completed. The agreement is set to be signed on January 31st 2011 by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak. The agreement will come into operation on July 2011 and is set to transform bilateral trade between the two countries.

Prime Minister Razak believes the CECA is a milestone in India-Malaysia relations and that the agreement will see a vast increase in trade, investment and other economic relations. In addition the two Prime Ministers had also discussed issues relating to higher education and visas. Prime Minister Singh also stated the “CECA will transform our economic engagement in a very substantial way”.

Prime Minister Singh arrived in Malaysia yesterday during the second part of a three nation tour of Asia. Prime Minister Singh has already been to Japan where discussions for the India-Japan CECA took place (for more on this story click India-Japan CECA to be Finalised). He will next visit Vietnam on October 28th to take part in the India- Associations of the Organisation of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit and the East Asia Summit.
