The Indian Government has announced it will spend Rs 3,000 crore during the current 11th five year plan period to set up 13 new Central universities and to convert three existing State universities into Central universities. The 16 Central universities throughout the various States were decided through the Central Universities Act, 2009. It is hoped that this move will increase access to and improve the quality of higher education in India.

In addition to this, the Union Cabinet also approved a proposal from the Department of Public Enterprises that Central Vigilance Officers (CVO) and representative officers part of the Vigilance Departments of Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSE) could be allowed the choice of electing to draw either the range of pay of the CPSE concerned or pay in the parent cadre plus deputation allowance.

The CVOs and other representative officers of the Vigilance Departments would also profit from certain privileges and benefits related to the equivalent level to officers in the related CPSEs. An official statement said, the move will allow CVOs and vigilance functionaries to work efficiently and remove the disparity in pay between the representatives and employees of the CPSEs.
