NEW DELHI (Reuters) – The Indian government faces a difficult session in Parliament as it seeks to pass the budget and other key bills. The difficulties were signalled as opposition protests over a number of issues briefly shut the reopening of the parliament on Thursday.

The government is facing major opposition parties, who have said they will seek a special vote on high food prices, which would force the government to resign if it loses it. Although no date has been set for the vote, the difficulties are apparent.

The Indian parliament reconvened after a month’s recess on Thursday, with opposition members disrupting proceedings and demanding a discussion on Maoist rebel attacks in which  more than 70 security personnel were killed earlier this month.

Criticism of the Indian government, amid allegations of corruption against a junior minister, are also expected to be leveled by opposition parties.

At a time when the Indian government is at its weakest since last years re-election, after two of its allies withdrew support over a bill reserving parliamentary seats for women, the latest events are expected to delay discussions on the budget and other important bills.

Although the Indian government does not face an immediate threat over the budget bill, the reduced parliamentary support means the government will concentrate on ensuring the budget is passed rather than focus its energies on other reform bills.
